Azenildo Santos is currently a Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology, Goldsmiths, University of London. His academic interests are body image in sports and exercise, doping in sport and exercise, performance-enhancing substances, sport sociology, sport psychology, anabolic steroids in public health, health promotion, sports nutrition.
His main is the research among bodybuilders using performance-enhancing substances and special anabolic steroids, with recreational, ideal body and aesthetic purpose, known as "aesthetic doping". He uses mainly qualitative and ethnographic approaches in his work. He also holds a BA in Physical Education. He authored the very first book on anabolic steroids in sports and exercise in Brazil, "O Mundo Anabólico", written in Portuguese. He completed his Ph.D. in Public Health, with an ethnographic approach, at the Federal University of Bahia, Salvador, Brazil
