PtDAs & SDM Interventions

Patient decision aids (PtDAs) and shared decision making (SDM) are both essential types of patient involvement interventions that focus on the decision-making process in healthcare.

PtDAs are resources to help patients make reasoned decisions between two or more healthcare options in the context of their daily life. They are often used in an SDM settings.

SDM takes place within consultations and is an interactive process in which patients and health professionals collaborate to choose healthcare options.

Patients and professionals exchange understanding, reason about preferences and implement an agreed choice.

The examples of these types of interventions listed below have all been validated by research.
